Bath Towels Buying Guide

Although we expect our towels and washcloths to keep us clean, dry us off and wipe up an occasional mess, other than adding to the dé cor of our bathrooms and price, many people put little thought into the towels they purchase.  So, how do you choose affordable quality towels that are right for your budget, your bathroom and you?

More details

When you’ re looking to purchase bath towels there are a few things you should consider – fabric, grams per square meter (GSM), style (color/pattern) and care.  When you consider these factors together, a little knowledge can go a long way and your towels will look, last and perform better in their roles.

The Basics – Towel Types and Sizes

A bathroom set traditionally consists of two bath towels, two face cloths or washcloths, and two hand towels. Fingertip and larger bath sheets may be added, but they are usually not displayed as part of a set for everyday use.
  • Bath Towels can reach sizes of 34" x 50" but vary in size depending on the manufacturer and end use, be it drying or decoration. The standard bath towel starts at about 27 inches x 52 inches, and can be found in sizes up to 30 inches x 58 inches
  • Hand Towels, as the name implies, are used for drying hands. Standard hand towel dimensions are 16" x 26" but can differ in size up to 18” x 30” .
  • Face Cloths or washcloths are usually 13" x 13".
  • Fingertip Towels are commonly 11" x 18" and usually placed near sinks for visitors.
  • Bath Sheets are a staple at luxury spas and first-class hotels, generally ranging from 35"x 60" to 40" x 72" inches, for body-wrapping comfort.

Towel Fabrics and Types

One of the first characteristics you'll want to look for in a new towel is its fabric. Bath towels are manufactured using a diverse range of fabrics, and the differences can affect your satisfaction and the life of a towel.

Towel Care Tips

Good towels should last at least a decade, which means you should consider making an "investment" by purchasing the highest quality towels you can afford.

Here are some tips that will help prolong the life of your towels:

  • Launder frequently with soft water and detergent
  • Avoid fabric softeners as they contain silicones that will make them virtually water repellent.
  • Deeply colored towels will bleed during the first three or four washings, so wash them separately at first. After that, continue to wash similar colors together.
  • Do not bleach colored towels.
  • Wash white towels separately because subtle pick-up from colored items will  occur gradually over time.
  • Do not iron towels, as it will reduce absorbency.
